Cyprus was forcibly divided in 1974, culminating in 1983 with the creation of the separatist state of Northern Cyprus in the northern third of the island. The full name of the state is the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which is currently recognized only by Turkey. Due to its status and embargo, Northern Cyprus is heavily dependent on Turkish military and economic support. This is, among other things, emphasized by the flag, which is clearly inspired by the Turkish flag. After the division of Cyprus, tourism in the north controlled by Turkey almost disappeared. Although it has started to develop more strongly in recent years, there is still plenty of deserted places in the increasingly popular Northern Cyprus. Long, mostly sandy beaches are also attractive. There are a number of important ancient and ancient monuments on the island.
