Ascent to the edge of a volcanic crater, which is known for its sulfur mining and the most acidic lake in the world, full of sulfuric acid.

View of Java from Bali

From the port of Gilimanuk in the west of Bali, we cross the boat to the east coast of the island of Java in 1 hour and stay in the city of Banyuwangi. We wait 5 hours on the Balinese side. The port is closed due to strong winds and big waves.

Between the clouds

We were supposed to leave early in the morning, but the vision of only 4 hours of sleep postpones the departure to a later time. Finally, we set off in a rented car to the base camp (Camping Ground Gunung Ijen). There is a snack (tea, coffee,…). We are obliged to borrow masks in case of respiratory complications. In dry and foggy weather we set off.

Mysterious landscape

After some 600 meters of pleasant ascent, a very steep ascent begins. At that moment, we are afraid of the return journey, because the journey down will definitely take our knees. We are still struggling with the clouds, which gives us only a few moments to look at the surrounding landscape.

First contact

We are approaching the edge of the crater, the clouds are starting to dissolve. The road is suddenly almost leveling off and we are here. Apocalyptic scene, crazy volcanic landscape with sulfur clouds.

Kawah Ijen

Miraculously, the clouds disappear somewhere down and we look in amazement at the beautiful lake, sometimes disappearing into the sulfur haze. It's not much for swimming, it is said that the lake is around 50 degrees and moreover it is not water, but acid.

Mount Ijen

From the edge of the crater, a path rises further along its edge. We're going after her. Not only the crater but also the surrounding mountains are fascinating.

Dead trees

We try to get as far as possible along the edge of the crater. Sulfur fumes are becoming more and more intense and the question is whether not to wear masks. Dead trees are evidence of the crazy conditions of this place. The descent to base camp is also insane.
