One of the popular trips to Bali is a visit to the volcanic lake Batur and a possible ascent to the volcano of the same name. Even the ride to the lake through the landscape of rice terraces with the final view of the lake from the region of the huge volcanic caldera is quite worth it.

Roundabout in Klungkung

From the south, four substantially parallel roads lead to the huge caldera of the Batur volcano (for example, a direct connection from Denpasar or Ubud). If you go from Padangbai, you will go to the easternmost one, which starts in the larger city of Klungkung. It is famous for its roundabout on Puptan Square with massive statues and a large monument. If you have more time, you can also visit the famous traditional market in this city. It is also a good starting point for rafting

Taxi in Klungkung

Horse taxis are rapidly declining in Bali as well, but it is still possible to meet some from time to time.

Rice terraces in Bali

The road from Klungung (95 m above sea level) leads from the beginning through a flat agricultural landscape without major attractions about 6 km before the zigzags on the flat ridge begin. Directly from the road is a nice view of the rice amphitheater.

View of the lake and the Batur volcano

The road continues to rise slowly along the slope of an ancient volcano, so that, after more than 20 more kilometers, a view opens up from the top of the caldera at about 1,320 m above sea level to the huge Lake Batur and the volcano of the same name.

Caldera of an ancient volcano

The whole area around Lake Batur is like a textbook of volcanic development in Bali for the last few tens of thousands of years. The caldera of the original volcano has dimensions of 10×13km, there is another slightly smaller caldera with dimensions of about 7km. Only from it grows the third volcano Batur, which is, however, significantly lower than its predecessors. The lake is located in the eastern part occupying the oldest part of the caldera.

At Lake Batur

From the viewpoint it is still a few kilometers to the lake, where you can take a walk along the shore, see the temple or go hiking in the direction of the volcano Batur
