Hverfjall volcano is located in northwestern Iceland on Lake Myvatn. It is a 420 meter high volcano, which dominantly rises above the surrounding plain. Nearby is an amazing landscape with many interesting places.

From Reykjahlíð through the Grjótagjá cave

Directly below the volcano itself can be reached by car. However, those who do so will lose the walk through the beautiful countryside between the town of Reykjahlíð and the volcano Hverfjall. Along the way you can stop at the Grjótagjá lava cave with a thermal spring. During the day there are quite a lot of tourists, so it is best to plan the whole trip for the evening.

Peek in, but don't bathe!

The cave is open, but of course you can't swim here.

Hlíðafjar Volcano

Not only Hverfjall dominates the plain. On the other side of Reykjahlíð, the Hlíðafjar volcano rises a little further to a height of 771 m above sea level.

And how far is it?

It is less than 8 kilometers from Reykjahlíð to the volcano and back. It is not far and moreover most of the way leads along the plain.
