Cork is a picturesque Irish town located in the south of the island. Its name originated from the Irish term for the „corcach“ swamp and its history dates back to the expansion of the Vikings into the 9th century, later in the 12th century it was declared king of Ireland. Cork is located in the deeply cut bay of the Irish Sea and at the mouth of the River Lee, which branches into two troughs in the city and part of the predominantly historic city finds itself on the island.

Market - English Market

Our first stop after a 3-hour bus ride from Dublin was to be the market in the city center. It is a great place both to taste various delicacies and to get acquainted with the spirit of the city. The marketplace is built in the architectural style of the mid-19th century and thus helps, together with the local vendors who offer their local products, to transfer to a time long past.

Saint Fin Barre's Cathedral

Cork can be proud of several beautiful majestic cathedrals, which are widely used by the locals, because the Irish are a very religious nation and Christianity predominates here, of course. Admission to this cathedral is subject to a fee, but its beauty can also be admired from the outside.

During the tour, we were mainly interested in its new study center together with the adjacent square, where students and passers-by can sit undisturbed. Holy Trinity Church & Capuchin Friary

We continue to explore the city and undoubtedly the iconic view of the city of Cork undoubtedly includes the Holy Trinity Church (also known as the Father Mathew Memorial Church). We find it at the southern branch of the Lee River. Bridges across the river provide very good views of the church. Along the way, we pass the original Irish Gothic national monument commemorating the uprising, which was unveiled in 1906.
