A tour of the oldest monastery
A tour of the oldest monastery on the island of Lesbos – Moni Ypsilou also includes beautiful mountain views and a drive along a narrow road almost to the top of the Ordymnos volcano. It's ideal to leave early in the morning to make this slightly mythical place just for you.
In front of Mount Ordymnos
Just a short distance behind the historic village of Antissa, the volcano Ordymnos (511 m above sea level) is already in front of you in all its beauty. At its top stands the oldest monastery on the island of Lesbos – Moni Ypsilou. The road to the top is one-way. You will go down on the other side of the mountain.
Military base below the summit
You will go up the hill along a steep and narrow road. You will definitely appreciate that it is one-way and that you will not have to avoid anyone. Just below the summit is a small military base, monitoring the whole west of the island thanks to a great view.
Valley to Sigri
Nearly half a kilometer below you is a relatively fertile valley stretching to the seaside town of Sigri.
Valley to the Petrified Forest
The valley leading southwest is more arid. You will see it more when you go on a tour of the Petrified Forest, which lies directly above it.
North view
There is also a nice view to the north, where only dusty roads lead
The gate to the monastery
Upon entering the monastery, you will feel as if you are entering a castle.
