A volcanic classic of New Zealand
Just thirty kilometers south of Rotorua lies an interesting place called Wai-O-Tapu, which in Maori means „holy waters“. Maybe it would be better to call this place „hellish waters“, because here you will see huge bubbling muddy holes, multicolored volcanic lakes and splashing geysers. There is also perhaps the most famous lake in New Zealand – Champagne pool. For tourists, there are three consecutive circuits. Of course, it is ideal to go through all three. When traveling through New Zealand or the North Island, it is definitely worth making a stop at this geothermal place.
Sleeping Geyser Lady Knox
It pays to come to the Wai-O-Tapu area early in the morning. At 10:15 one of the local attractions starts here – the eruption of Lady Knox geyser. It is located a little next to the rest of the site, so it is not left on foot or by car to move about 1.5 km north of the visitor center. For most of the day, the geyser is only slightly „sniffing“.
Lady Knox eruption
The place itself is not exactly twice as romantic. An amphitheater with benches for visitors rises above the geyser. After 10 o'clock, an employee of the park will come, tell about the geysers and then pour soap into it at the specified time – this will stimulate a chain reaction and the geyser will explode to a height of about 6–8 meters.
Devil´s Home
After completing the „show“ at Lady Knox Geyser, return to the information center and set out on a nature tour. The first stop is Devil´s Home, which is just a deep hole in a country where it doesn't live much. Just such a gradual start and a desire for what will happen next.
Rainbow Crater
A little further on, it's a more interesting, huge sniffing hole surrounded by a nice New Zealand forest.
Devil´s Ink Pots
There are many different sniffing ponds with boiling mud – it can be seen that it really lives here under the surface.
View of the Artist's Palatte
There follows a beautiful view of the painter's palette
Nature trail
The actual march on Wai-O-Tap is precisely determined by the nature trail. After all, it would not be good in these very places if everyone walked as they please. There would probably be enough injuries.
Painter's palette on the other side
The local painter therefore won nicely, albeit in an environment where it is quite often felt after popes.
Opal Pool
From another viewpoint is a view of a small opal pond
Magical Champagne Pool
Followed by a very interesting Champagne Pool, probably the most famous local place. In these places, the first excursion circuit turns back and begins the second, more of a clutch than a very interesting one
Panoramic View
After walking through the forest, there is a nice view of the entire system of lakes. From here you will descend the stairs to the individual lakes.
Alum Cliffs
After descending the stairs, you will reach the third circuit leading around several lakes. The cliffs of Alum are directly below the lookout
Oyster Pool
Another of the nice lakes on the excursion circuit is Oyster Pool
Lake Ngakoro
The farthest part of the excursion circuit is the view of Lake Ngakoro. From here, the way back is waiting for you.
Road through the woods
The circuit turns back and follows a short journey through a New Zealand forest with ferns, the so-called Native Bush walk.
Devil´s Cave
The last big attraction of the tourist circuit along Wai-O-Tap is the chemical lake Devil´s Cave.
