Panoramic view of the city
Telegraph Hill is one of the most famous hills in San Francisco. It rises to a height of 90 meters above the bay and is best known for its shape, which resembles an elephant. The hill was named after a telegraph station that was built on the hill in 1853.
The adjacent area is a popular place to live because of its views of the city and the historic character of the surrounding houses.
Panoramic view
From the top there is a panoramic view of San Francisco Bay, the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. The lookout and adjacent park is a popular spot for walks, picnics and bird watching. You can climb up the steep stairs or take the bus line. There is also a small parking lot at the top.
Fashionable district
The hill is the highest point of the hilly precinct of North Beach. The area is known for its steep streets, Victorian houses and stunning views of the city. It is therefore home to many mobile residents, artists and writers.
Coit Tower
The top of the hill is dominated by the 64 meter tall Coit Tower. The art deco concrete tower was built in 1933 as a tribute to San Francisco firefighters. It is named after a prominent resident of the city, Lillie Hitchcock Coit, who supported the firefighters and from whose estate the tower was built. The tower's interiors feature murals by a number of different artists.
