Ruapehu (2 797 m asl) is the highest volcano of New Zealand and the highest peak of the North Island. It is located in the south of Tongariro National Park. Ascent to this volcano is no longer the lightest and should only be used by experienced hikers. Very nice is the large crater lake (500×500 meters) at an altitude of (2 525 meters above sea level).
