Nowadays, when the travel boom came here after the year 2000, various equipment also comes here to this hobby. Some people can't afford an old classic, others try something new and others try something that can do it very quickly. I'll make a cross-section of what can be found here. Since I also had most of the cookers in hand, or inquired, I can interpret the experiences of others and approach which situation it may be suitable for or it may be enough for someone.

Alcohol tablets

The most basic thing for making a fire or cooking. Paraffin lighters that do not stink are also good for starting a fire. There are many alcohol tablets on the market. They are most often used in our country under the name Hexa. Next to the sample is a packaged American alcohol tablet. + purchase price – lower calorific value + very compact – they can stink + I can start a fire – more time when cooking + the same calorific value in any weather + I can also use it in an improvised cooker + weight

Alcohol stove for solid alcohol

The most famous solid alcohol stove Crib. The cost of this stove is minimal. Easy handling. Even if I don't burn the tablets, they can be ignited again. It can be stored in a jacket pocket. The empty cot can hold 4 tablets, which is enough for a trek for 1 night. For better calorific value, it is ideal to look for a leeward. The more expensive variant of the Crib is from Esbit. There is one big to fatal downside to Esbit. There are vents from under the bed. So if I don't put Esbit on a non-flammable surface, 100% alcohol tablets will ignite what's under it thanks to the vents. So if you are inattentive and away from a lit stove, a fire is sure to start. I have personal experience with this, when alcohol has always ignited what is under it. The Czech cot is better in this. TIP! Cooking against gas, jetboil or petrol is longer 3–4 times longer. That's why I always cook in a way that I split the stove and let it cook. In the meantime, I'm packing my backpack or unpacking for bed. I always have it cooked before I pack it up or spread it out, so cooking takes almost no time. 1 tablet = heating / 1 person 2 tablets = cooking / 1 person 3–4 tablets = cooking / 2 – 3 persons + purchase price – lower calorific value + weight – I may come across poor alcohol + storage including tablets – they may stink + the same calorific value for – More time to cook in any weather

Vařík - an old classic

Vařík thus sounds the official name of this classic and is used for both solid and liquid alcohol. It's like a jigsaw puzzle in this coffee or tea mug. I personally don't use a mug only if I forget to take my mug. The mug thus serves me as an emergency mug, but above all as a cover for this jigsaw puzzle. Its multifunctionality is generous even today. I can use the extensions themselves on an improvised cooker or on gel cookers. The cook has two containers. One for solid alcohol, which can hold 2 tablets, and the other for liquid alcohol. So I have two options for what I will cook on. So I have two cookers and I can cook in two pots! The problem is, he's looking badly. It is not produced. Or I don't know about his replacement. Today, its price can be in the order of hundreds of crowns. Another advantage is that it is foldable in a pocket. Thanks to the extensions, it has a solid lee which I can reduce by one floor. So I don't need to look so much for leeward or as it is written above the risk of a bad batch of alcohol is much smaller ++ is its multifunctionality – availability + purchase price – lower calorific value + weight – cooking time + storage – tablets can stink + for two fuels + two cookers in one + the same calorific value in any weather

Liquid alcohol stove

There are several types of liquid alcohol cookers and they are an available affair today. For some species, the flame is regulated. They are also of different capacities. The advantage is that liquid alcohol does not stink. The availability of alcohol is practically everywhere. The disadvantage is that alcohol is sold in large quantities. The cookers I was interested in are from Pathfindr. + weight – lower calorific value + I can regulate the flame – cooking time + storage (depending on the type) – price + same calorific value in all weather

Gel cookers

I got acquainted with Gel Cookers about 7–8 years ago. They are filled with a flammable gel resembling napalm. They are affordable, do not stink, do not get dirty, they are compact. It is a good alternative to small cookers. Use the gel to start a fire. There are several types. From the military see. picture after civilian see. picture. Some also have an ash attachment. The disadvantage is the low calorific value. I noticed this with about 700 ml of water, when even after 20 minutes I did not bring the water to a boil. It can also happen that there is significantly less gel after opening the can. Therefore, I recommend this stove for cooking by only one person. This means boiling in 400 ml of water. Otherwise, it is used to heat food. + price – low calorific value + storage – the can does not have to be full + does not stain – time consuming large + fire can be started – unsuitable for cooking more than 1 person. + availability – used for heating rather than cooking + weight

Gas cookers

Probably the most common cooker among all. There are countless species and there are countless types of cartouches. Its big positive is the speed of cooking and cleanliness. It doesn't stink either. For cheap variants, this type of cooker is very cumbersome. Thanks to the types of cookers, the heads are also of different sizes, so the burner has either a small flame diameter or a large flame diameter, which can significantly affect cooking. The big disadvantage of gas cookers is the weather. Even at 5 ° C, it can be felt that the calorific value of the gas is very weak. So weak that the alcohol stove will surpass it in every way. There are, however, variants of gas cartridges for winter conditions. + heating speed – in bad weather low calorific value + does not get dirty – cheap versions bulky + more expensive versions storage – possibility of explosion + cheap cartridges – price – weight (even for one day I have to drag with the whole cartridge) – cartridge cannot get on the plane

Jetboil

The most modern cooking of today. The purchase price also corresponds to this. They are for gas stoves and are mainly used for boiling water. Its speed is comparable to induction. But even this device has its downsides. If I place another container, the whole cooking system will change. Even with flame regulation, the heat is very intense and it burns the food. It is mainly used to boil water, so coffee, tea and dehydrated food. So when shopping, consider how I eat on the trek. Also reckon with the fact that it will take up space in the backpack, because as with small stoves, it does not fit in the pocket – cartridge – burner – container. + very fast heating – price + does not stain – used to heat water rather burns food + saves fuel – storage – the possibility of explosion – designed for only one container. When using another container heat loss or malfunction – weight – cartridge can not get into the plane

Woodpecker

Very popular with woodsmen. The advantage of a wood chipper is that I can make it myself. From a beer can, canned goulash. If I'm skilled, then cut out of the sheet metal. Commercial wood chippers are relatively expensive. The disadvantage of a commercial wood chipper is the weight. It weighs 1 kg. It is used to burn twigs, leaves and cones. I personally prefer a small fire than a wood chipper + I find fuel in the woods – dirty dishes + storage – price + I can make my own – possibility of fire – I don't have to get fuel – weight

Gasoline stove

Very similar to the gas one. There are old versions that served on the principle of gasification. Heating and subsequent combustion of vapors. Today's gas stations work a little differently. The advantage is high calorific value even at low temperatures, where gas cookers are already dying. Cooking is controlled and heating is comparable to gas. The downside is that he needs such a cooker care. It gets dirty quickly, so it needs to be cleaned and it will get dirty even when folded, after all it still burns petrol + high calorific value – price in any weather – storage + fast heating – dirt – cartridge cannot get on the plane – care of the stove
