Not only thanks to visa-free policies, Kyrgyzstan is one of the most popular travel destinations in Central Asia. Thanks to the fact that it is written in Cyrillic, you can speak only Russian, and outside the main localities, public transport only occasionally commutes. It is one of the medium-difficult countries to travel.

Landscape types

Petr Liška Wrote 24.07.2015:

North of the country: the most accessible high mountains are the Kyrgyz ridge with the famous Ala Archa National Park just a few kilometers south of Bishkek. Then the area of the vast, Kyrgyz Sea Issyk-Kul surrounded on all sides by mountains. The most famous is the area of the Těrský Alatau mountains with a famous trek across the individual valleys. In the very east of the country, these are the highest peaks of Tian Schian surrounding the elongated Inylchek Glacier. Further south is another large lake Sonköl. South of the country: here it goes mainly to the Alai Valley to the Pamir Mountains separating Kyrgyzstan from Tajikistan. The glaciated Turkestan ridge is also interesting.

Traveler Itineraries

Classic Itineraries

Petr Liška Wrote 24.07.2015:

A typical trip to Kyrgyzstan begins in the capital ** Bishkek **. We continue to the lake ** Issyk Kul ** and the bathing resort ** Cholpon Ata **. From here, it is a short walk to ** Karakolu ** with endless trekking opportunities in central ** Tian Shan **. From Karakol you go back along the southern side of Lake Issyk Kul with stops at the waterfall ** Barskoon ** and the canyon ** Skazka **. The next stop is the huge lake ** Sonkol **. Usually the trip ends with a shorter trek in the ** Ala Archa ** National Park.

Off Beaten Itineraries

Tourists little visited is basically the whole center and south of the country. The first stop here are the magical lakes ** Sary-Chelek ** and ** Kyzyl-Köl **. Then it continues to the unique ecosystem with the largest walnut forest in the world in ** Arstanbap **. After the stop in Oša, we continue to the interesting Alaj Valley to the base camp below Pik Lenin or to the Turkestan ridge, which is nicknamed the Kyrgyz Patagonia.

Combination with neighboring countries

Petr Liška Wrote 24.07.2015:
  • ** Central Asia circuit: ** Of course, the Central Asia circuit runs through Kyrgyzstan. Most often in combination with Kazakhstan (Alma Ata), Tajikistan (connection on the Pamir Highway), Uzbekistan (Samarkand, Bukhara)

Journey around the World

Petr Liška Wrote 24.07.2015:
  • ** The Silk Road: ** For those who have even more time, there is an interesting journey along the Silk Road: a long journey through China to Kashgar and then across the Torugart or Irkestham Pass to Kyrgyzstan and further along its route through Central Asia.

The most beautiful areas

Petr Liška Wrote 24.07.2015:

The basic division of the country is north and south. The capital Bishkek dominates in the north. This part of the country is more easily accessible to tourists and significantly more visited. People here are more „Russified“ and less religious. In the south, the largest city is Oš. There is more heat and even a very religious Fergana basin. The Tian Shan mountain ridges are mostly located on the west-east line, which makes it difficult to connect the south of the country with the north. Between the highest point of the country – Piku Pobedy (7,439 m above sea level) and the lowest Kara-Darya (132 m above sea level) is an impressive 7,307 meters.
