Hiking circuits & Trekking
Possibility of trekking activities in Bolivia is huge. Incas Trails, summiting Andean peaks and volcanos on the Altiplano attract tourists from around the world.
Classic Treks

Difficulty of hiking trails
Most treks run in the wilderness, so the difficulty of the routes is relatively greater, especially when crossing high mountain passes. Mostly only old Inca routes, often paved, are nicely landscaped.
Support on the trek
Support for the trek is so widespread here in neighboring Peru or Nepal, but even here you can arrange a trek with complete support.
Travel agencies
There are a lot of trekking / travel agencies, especially in La Paz. Everything can be arranged on site at affordable prices. Classic trips are: Death Road, Palca Canyon, Chacaltaya, Moon Valley and more.
Mountain Guides
If you do not want to trek independently, it is possible to arrange a professional trek guide in La Paz.
Porters
As in neighboring Peru, it is possible to arrange for longer friction support in the form of donkeys, which carry most of the luggage.
Mountains Climbing
In Bolivia, there are many peaks, which you can try to climb. Easier are volcanoes on the Altiplano than glaciated peaks of the Andes. Always be aware of the great altitude. Despite the vast number of peaks that Bolivia has a classic mountain known outputs only a few.
Maps and orientation in the landscape
It is not at all bad to have pre-recorded GPS coordinates of important places on the trek.
One day Hikes
Tupiza: In the vicinity of Tupiza it is possible to take a number of day trips. Despite the fact that these are mostly well-known tours, there are very few visitors.
Maps and sketches
- There are very few maps available, mostly only simple sketches in book guides are available. – There are two maps for Cordillera Real at a scale of 1:50 000 from Alpenverein – Cordillera Real North / Illamp and Cordillera Real South / Illimani
Walks
You won't find many classic walks in Bolivia. There are a few short stops at the Salar Tour.
Peaks for Hikers
- ** Chacaltaya ** (5,363 m above sea level): The most famous tourist peak of Bolivia is undoubtedly Chacaltaya, located just a short distance from La Paz. – ** Cerro Calvario **: the lookout hill on Titicac above Copacabana is a destination for almost every tourist. – ** Licancabur ** (5,960 m above sea level) and ** Tunupa **: Altiplan volcanoes available as part of an individual salar tour. – On the Altiplán near the border with Chile, there are a number of high volcanoes, where you will not meet anyone at all. E.g. ** Irruputuncu ** or ** Sillajuay **. These abandoned places are mainly in parts of the Altiplano, where they no longer go off-road on a salar tour. – Interesting and relatively easily accessible is, for example, ** Uturuncu ** (6,008 m above sea level), the lightest 6,000 in the world.
Easier climbing Peaks
- The most famous „lighter“ climbing mountain is ** Huyana Potosí ** near La Paz. It is organized by travel agencies in the city – In the northwestern part of the Altiplano, accessible by public transport, these are the volcanoes ** Sajama **, ** Parinacota ** and ** Pomerape **. They all have a snow cap, so cats are needed.
