The biggest Buddha in Ladakh
Very interesting monastery Likir is lying less than 50 kilometers from Leh in a side valley. It boasts the biggest sitting Buddha statue in Ladakh and very picturesque monastery situated on a small hill as the center of a nice oasis surrounded by high mountain desert. Because it is situated a few kilometers from the main road Shrinagar – Leh hwy, it is definitely not so frequently visited as other monasteries in the Indus valley.
Likirs valley
Even the arrival to the monastery itself looks beautiful – a small tarmac road winds between chortens and whitewashed monastery Likir glitters under the arid mountain ridges of Ladackh.
Sitting Buddha
Even from afar you can see the biggest local attraction – a huge sitting Buddha.
The arid surroundings of the monastery
Except for the fertile area around the river flowing here from the mountains there is an utter desert.
Mountains above the valley of Indus
In these places is Indus Valley already not so wide as near Leh. Behind the canyon of the river rises sharply mountain ridge, behind which leads one of the less frequently walked treks connecting Lamayuru with Chilling.
Likir Gompa
The monastery buildings are typical – snow-white building combined with beautifully worked wood.
Sitting Buddha
The biggest attraction in the monastery is Buddha sitting on the roof of the monastery. It has 23 meters, so it is really huge. But it is not historical as it has been built in 1999.
Panorama from the roof
The most beautiful view of the surrounding countryside is from the roof of the monastery – terraced fields slope down aslong the local river valley.
