Castle over the Hunza valley
On a small rocky cliff high above the river Hunza stands an ancient watchtower that guarded the trade route. It is also a very nice view of the surrounding mountains and also of the roofs of the old town in Altit, where piles of apricots dry in the season. It is an ideal destination of walks from Karimabad.
Fort Altit
After passing through the historical center of Altit, with its small houses jammed to one another, which are worth a visit too, you ascend to a small, more than a thousand years old fort.
Old Altit
Directly under the tower is an old town with flat roofs, which are used for example for drying of local excellent apricots.
Interior of the fort
Even the interiors of this ancient fort are worth a visit. One can get an idea of how men lived here long ago. Moreover, the tourist is here nearly alone, so the whole fort is practically just for him.
Hunza valley oases
The most beautiful views from the fort are straight down into the valley. Karakoram highway overcomes the river over a nice bridge here.
Hunza river
The boundaries between life and death, which are determined by the presence of water, are clearly visible here.
View to the north
Karakorum highway leads in the north direction to gigantic landslide lake Attabad – another of wonders of Hunza valley.
