The largest glacier in mainland Europe
Jostedalsbreen, or if you want the Jostedals Glacier, is the largest glacier in mainland Europe, located on the west coast of southern Norway. It covers a 60 km long valley and covers 487 km2
Day 12
Jostedalsbreen National Park
After breakfast we pack up and go to the next point, which is the Jostedalsbreen glacier. The largest glacier in mainland Europe. There are a lot of paths to the glacier, we chose one and then we went. When we are almost with him as one of the few honest people, we pay a parking fee of 40Nok and do not risk a fine of 200Nok. I admit that one local tourist had to advise us. The parking fee was paid in such a way that there was a box in which the driver threw the enclosed envelope with money. So we were able to continue and enjoy the surrounding landscape. We drive around Lake Lovatnet. The water was amazingly turquoise, beautifully cut grass and rocks all around, just a fairy tale. We parked and headed closer to the glacier along a stone path. We probably chose a different and wrong path, but we went closer to it despite the water and stones all around. We only saw a really small part of it. In fact, it is much more beautiful. Now we know that the preparations here, we underestimated. We had to study the roads more and go from Briksdalsbre. But I must say that even though we see only a short distance of it, it is beautiful and huge.
