Southeastern end of the island around the village of Muri meets the phantasies of Pacific paradise – white beaches, lagoon, coconut palms and overgrown coral islands motus. Fortunately, accommodation capacity on the beach is limited and that is why there are no extreme crowds. It is just the perfect place for a few days of relaxation.

Taakoka Motu on Muri beach

Muri beach is renowned not only for a nice swimming lagoon, but mainly for four photogenic coral islands motus. The southernmost Taakoka motu is the best – it looks like as the one from a movie about castaways. But it is densely overgrown with tropical vegetation and except for it there is nothing to see.

Tourist Koromiri motu

Koromiri motu is the most popular with tourists thanks to its sandy beaches. Everyone can swim or go on kayak to it from Muri beach. Favorite are also boat trips– people usually have a barbecue here as well. You can walk to this Koromiri motu through water with a camera in hand – but only at low tide, if you have a sure step and are not afraid you may bathe the camera. The other side of the motu is full of piles of old corals and views to the end of the lagoon, on which pretty big waves shatter.

Muri Beach

The beach and its surroundings have fortunately only low buildings and therefore you can see on the horizon steep walls of mountains from the interior of Raratonga covered with lush vegetation.

The remains of corals on Muri beach

Muri beach is a little tricky in one thing – although it is sandy, there are coral remnants in some places. And they are sometimes quite sharp. So if you do not wear bathing shoes, you shall count that you will scrape your feet at least once a day.

Relax at Muri Beach

Although Muri beach is the most famous beach on Raratonga, there are no crowds and there are even moments when you may feel here almost alone :-)

Walk along the beach in the north direct

You can walk along the beach in the north direction only until the opposite of the beginning of the third Oneroa motu. Then the coast becomes much less passable. In addition, swimming is already quite dangerous here – the current pulling warm water from the lagoon to the open sea is gaining strength here and an attempt to swim to the third motu can thus end ingloriously. So watch out!

Walk along the beach in the south direct

You can walk quite far in the south direction. But the water is very shallow and rocky here, so there are not many places suitable for swimming.

Coconut palms

Traditional beach scene not only in the Pacific – coconut palms. So be careful especially during storms and wind – especially those on Muri beach seem not to be regularly picked.

Sailing on the lagoon

Sailing on the lagoon is one of favorite sports on Muri beach.
