The easiest way how to get to know the life on Lake Atitlán is to walk along the shore and visit local villages. Along the way there are beautiful views of the lake and the surrounding volcanoes. It is ideal to go back by boat and thereby enjoy a cruise on the lake.

San Pedro la Laguna

San Pedro is a bustling town on the edge of the lake. Sometimes you have a problem do your way through streets that are full of improvised markets.

View of San Pedro

Just walk a bit out of town and there is already a beautiful panoramic view of it.

Atitlan taxi

On this walk is relatively unpleasant first section between San Pedro and San Juan, where is busy traffic and so we can only recommend to overcome it in the local tuk tuk. You will have here such an Indian feeling if you see these carts here in so plentiful numbers.

Remnants of volcano

Just behind San Juan the traffic goes down significantly and there are nice views of green mountain ridge, which is the rest of the giant volcano, whose crater is now entirely flooded with lake. A winding path leads to smaller top in front of the top – ideal outlook for those who have a lot of energy and time.

Parade of volcanoes

The path is gradually approaching the town of San Pablo and the views across the lake to the volcanoes San Pedro, Tolimán and Atitlán are breathtaking.

Small cove near San Marcos

After almost two hours of walking you come to the small town of San Pablo, where the main road turns high into the hills and bustle fades away. There are nice views of the small cove between San Pablo and San Marcos.

Small peninsula

Bay with a peninsula looks really romantic.

Tropical garden

It is possible to stop for a cocktail in a beautiful tropical garden overlooking the lake and slightly relax just in front of San Marcos.

Lake in the backlit

Lake in the backlight has a very interesting atmosphere. Unfortunately, there is quite often a rule that after the morning mist dissolves, it is beautifully for a few hours and sunset comes already in the early afternoon and the sun is gone.

Mass service in San Marcos

The locals are strong believers so there are always a lot of people in front of the church before the mass service.

View to the east

However, the path from San Marcos continues farther to the east along the lake – but even locals do not recommend it because of the great danger of bandits. So it depends on you whether you take a boat and go back or continue at your own risk.
