The highest mountain in the Eastern Saya
Мунку – Сардык (Munku – Sardyk) is the highest mountain in the Eastern Sayan. Мунку is in Burjats (or in Mongolian) eternal and Сардык means mountain or the highest. The ascent to 3,491 m high mountain is not very easy, but is definitely worth it. In good weather it offers fantastic panoramic views and leaves on the soul of travelers and lovers of mountains very deep impression and desire to return here.
The path through the valley of the river
If we start from the base camp at Стрелке (Strelke), it is necessary to go upstream the river Мугувек (Muguvek). The path leads from the beginning through narrow gorge between rocks.
Lake Эхой (Echoj)
After the ascent to the flatter part of the valley the valley separates. We ascent through a small valley in the right and after the flat part comes steeper part that leads us to the lake Эхой (Echoj). The whole time we can enjoy the views of the peaks, which are often without names in the maps. Suddenly appears before us a lake and behind is also visible our destination – the top of Мунку Сардык (Munku Sardyk).
Ascent into the pass Munku
We walk around the lake and slowly start to ascent into the pass Мунку (Munku). We keep more to the ridge on our right hand.
Along the way we see a sign that serves as a memorial to a girl who unfortunately become a victim of avalanches. This sign may also serve as a good orientation point. Behind it we turn to the right to the pass Munku (2 997 m asl).
As long as we reach the pass Munku, we found ourselves on the border with Mongolia. We can continue with the descent into the next valley (another trip), but for the ascent we take the ridge to the right. The path occasionally leads through a little bit exposed terrain and in addition, there is a slope below us leading by about 500 m lower to the lake Эхой. However, it depends also on conditions. Before us is already quite close visible the very top.
Last meters to the top
The last few meters lead along the debris field. Below us is located on the slope of a small glacier. Views of the opposite ridges are indeed beautiful, but it is worth to ascent up to the top.
The highest peak of the Eastern Sayan
Finally, we are at the destination of the ascent and the views on all sides are fantastic. Ahead in the east we see how the slopes of Sayan mountains fall in the direction to Mongolia.
To the south towards Mongolia is a fantastic view of the beautiful lake Хубсугул (Chubsugul). This lake lies at an altitude of (1,645m asl) and is sometimes also called the younger brother of Baikal, because a river flows from it which then becomes part of Selenga and flows into Lake Baikal. This lake is considered to be one of the most beautiful in Mongolia and from there it is almost all at your fingertips.
The ridge of the Eastern Sayan
On the eastern side is visible the ridge going further along the border. The closest to us are tops г. Леонова, г. Авиатор а г. Крилья Советов (g. Leonov, g. and g. Aviator Krilja Sovetov). In the distance we can guess somewhere down the hills village of Mondy and Tunkisk valley, along which we came on the road from Baikal.
View of Lake Эхой (Echoj)
On the north side below us lies the lake Эхой (Echoj), where is the ascent usually started and from where we also came. In the direction to the right then falls the river Мугувек (Muguvek). Above the lake rises г. Катка – Дура (g Katka – Dura) and behind it you can guess a massive of Обзорной (Obzornoj).
The border ridge from Munku
In the west is then in full view the entire boundary ridge that leads up to пик Пограничный (Pik Pogranicnyj), which is only slightly lower than Munku itself.
The descent on the glacier
When we have already enjoyed the views, we can begin the descent down. The quickest way leads directly along the glacier to lake Эхой (Echoj). The descent is quite steep and so you should have crampons and also ice ax for the case you fall down. When we happily get to the lake, we can already carry on the same way we came down to the camp or conceivably we can camp here.
Count with 12–14 hours of walking for the whole ascent and the way back.
