Almost the entire Yucatan is really very flat and even the individual peaks only slightly protrude beyond the surrounding landscape

Due to its flat shape, there are not many breathtaking natural wonders in the Yucatan. However, visitors also come here mainly for swimming and Mayan monuments. However, there is one exception, and that is the beautiful cenote cave. They usually have a sunken ceiling, through which the sun's rays fall on the swimming pools.

One of the biggest natural attractions in the Yucatan are the semi-flooded karst cenotes caves, which were sacred to the Maya. If you go to the Yucatan, it would be a sin not to visit at least one.

The highest hills of the individual Mexican federal states in the Yucatan are: – ** Cerro Champerico ** (390 m above sea level) in the state of Campeche – ** Cerro El Charro ** (240 m above sea level) in the state of Quintano Roo – ** Cerro Benito Juaréz ** (210m nm) in the State of Yucatan

• Reptiles: you can see lots of big iguanas basking on the rocks of Mayan ruins.
• Whale shark: northeast of Isla Mujeres
• Turtles: four species of turtles lay eggs on the island of Isla Contoy, where it is established a national park. A visit here is only to permit. Maximum 200 visitors per day

Yucatán is a good destination for nature lovers. There live lots of species of birds, turtles, reptiles, sharks, monkeys.

• The best birdwatching in the Yucatan is in reservation Sian Ka'an. In addition, they live here as well as monkeys and crocodiles.
• In the lagoon adjacent to the island of Holbox, which is so far little affected by tourism, are seen pelicans and flamingos.
• Laguna Celestun at Merida is the most famous place for watching flamingos on the Yucatan. (The most you will see flamingos in the winter).
• Rio Lagartos (inhabited by over 250 species of birds)

Merida Zoo: The largest zoo in the Yucatan is in Merida. There are more than 1000 animals.
